Heavy metals adsorbed to particulate matter are among the pollutants incorporated in the remnants of Atlantic Forest in urban areas. These can be retained on the treetops and incorporated into the soil. Once available in the soil these can be absorbed via roots. The accumulation of these elements in plants can lead to increased cellular levels of reactive oxygen species and cause oxidative damage, the intensity of which will depend on the ability of native species to produce antioxidative defenses. Thus, based on the scientific knowledge available in the literature and produced by our team, the summation \u00a0\u00a0that ni and zn metals contained in urban particulate matter, when incorporated in to the soil of an urban AtlanticForest fragment, increase the bioavailable fraction for the plant community and that non-pioneer tree species accumulate more nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) and are more susceptible to oxidative stress than pioneer species when grown in contaminated soil.. Essas hip\u00f3teses foram testadas experimentalmente utilizando Ni e Zn (marcadores de fontes urbanas de material particulado). The present study was proposed to: evaluate whether there will be an increase in the bioavailability of Ni and Zn after their addition in soil from an urban fragment of Atlantic Forest located in the city of S\u00e3o Paulo; determine the level of accumulation of Ni and Zn added to the soil in roots, stems\/branches and leaves of young plants of pioneer tree species and non-pioneer species native to the Atlantic Forest of S\u00e3o Paulo; determine the level of tolerance of tree species to Ni and Zn added to the soil, by analyzing changes in the growth rates and biomass production of shoots and roots, in the profile of defenses (antioxidants: ascorbic acid, \u00a0glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase) and cellular damage (pigments, lipid peroxidation indicators and reactive oxygen species)) and order the species chosen as a function of their ability to build up Ni and Zn in plant tissues above ground, their level of tolerance to heavy metals and the occurrence of cellular damage , in order to verify that the resulting ordering has been determined according to the functional group to which each species belongs. The experiment was carried out with three pioneer tree species (Pi; <em>Croton floribundus, Inga sessilis <\/em>and<em> Rapanea ferruginea<\/em>) and three non-pioneers (NPi<em>; Eugenia uniflora, Esenbeckia leiocarpa <\/em>and<em> Ocotea odorifera<\/em>) native to the Atlantic Forest. These were grown in soil collected in urban fragment of Forest for 90 days, with balanced fertilization (control) and in enriched soil of Ni, Zn and Ni+Zn, reaching concentrations three times higher than those proposed by CETESB to prevent risks associated with soil contamination (30 and 86 mg\/ Kg of soil for Ni and Zn respectively). \u00a0The results showed that the concentrations of these metals increased significantly in the bioavailable fractions of the soil, in the treatments in which there was addition of these. The highest levels of Ni and Zn in the plants were found in the treatments with the addition of these. The absolute content (concentration*dry mass of each plant organ) of Ni and Zn in the plants of the species evaluated in this study directly reflected the soil level of these metals in the available forms, being higher in pioneer species than in non-pioneer species. Translocation indices were not similar among pioneer or non-pioneer species and ni was transceied only to shoots in treatments with excess of this metal. The tree species presented different biochemical characteristics and similar to exposure to nickel and zinc metals. The results also allowed us to verify the level of tolerance of the species to oxidative stress induced by Ni and\/or Zn, as follows<em>: R. ferruginea<\/em> (Pi) = <em>E. uniflora<\/em> (NPi) &gt; \u00a0<em>I. sessilis<\/em> \u00a0(Pi) &gt; \u00a0<em>C. floribundus<\/em> \u00a0(Pi) &gt; \u00a0<em>E. leiocarpa<\/em> \u00a0(NPi) &gt; \u00a0<em>O. odorifera<\/em> \u00a0(NPi).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Key words<\/strong>: Environmental stresses, Atlantic Forest, pioneer and non-pioneer tree species, antioxidants, oxidative damage.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>RESUMO<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Os ecossistemas florestais v\u00eam sendo afetados nas \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas por uma diversidade de poluentes devido \u00e0 expans\u00e3o das atividades antr\u00f3picas. Os metais pesados adsorvidos ao material particulado est\u00e3o entre os poluentes incorporados nos remanescentes de Mata Atl\u00e2ntica em \u00e1reas urbanas. Estes podem ser retidos sobre as copas das \u00e1rvores e incorporados no solo. Uma vez dispon\u00edveis no solo estes podem ser absorvidos via ra\u00edzes. O ac\u00famulo destes elementos nas plantas pode levar ao aumento dos n\u00edveis celulares de esp\u00e9cies reativas de oxig\u00eanio e causar danos oxidativos, cuja intensidade depender\u00e1 da capacidade das esp\u00e9cies nativas produzirem defesas antioxidativas. Assim, com base no conhecimento cient\u00edfico dispon\u00edvel na literatura e produzido por nossa equipe, assumimos que os metais Ni e Zn contidos no material particulado urbano, ao serem incorporados no solo de um fragmento de Mata Atl\u00e2ntica urbano, aumentam a fra\u00e7\u00e3o biodispon\u00edvel para a comunidade vegetal e que as esp\u00e9cies arb\u00f3reas n\u00e3o pioneiras acumulam mais n\u00edquel (Ni) e zinco (Zn) e s\u00e3o mais suscept\u00edveis ao estresse oxidativo do que esp\u00e9cies pioneiras quando crescidas em solo contaminado. Essas hip\u00f3teses foram testadas experimentalmente utilizando Ni e Zn (marcadores de fontes urbanas de material particulado). O presente estudo foi proposto objetivando: avaliar se haver\u00e1 aumento da biodisponibilidade de Ni e Zn ap\u00f3s a adi\u00e7\u00e3o dos mesmos no solo proveniente de um fragmento urbano de Mata Atl\u00e2ntica localizado na cidade de S\u00e3o Paulo; determinar o n\u00edvel de ac\u00famulo de Ni e Zn adicionados ao solo em ra\u00edzes, caules\/ramos e folhas de plantas jovens de esp\u00e9cies arb\u00f3reas pioneiras e esp\u00e9cies n\u00e3o pioneiras nativas de Mata Atl\u00e2ntica paulista; determinar o n\u00edvel de toler\u00e2ncia das esp\u00e9cies arb\u00f3reas ao Ni e Zn adicionados ao solo, por meio da an\u00e1lise de altera\u00e7\u00f5es nas taxas de crescimento e produ\u00e7\u00e3o de biomassa da parte a\u00e9rea e radicular, no perfil de defesas (antioxidantes: \u00e1cido asc\u00f3rbico, glutationa, super\u00f3xido dismutase, catalase, ascorbato peroxidase e glutationa redutase) e de danos celulares (pigmentos, indicadores de peroxida\u00e7\u00e3o lip\u00eddica e esp\u00e9cies reativas de oxig\u00eanio) e ordenar as esp\u00e9cies escolhidas em fun\u00e7\u00e3o de sua capacidade de ac\u00famulo de Ni e Zn nos tecidos vegetais acima do solo, de seu n\u00edvel de toler\u00e2ncia a metais pesados e de ocorr\u00eancia de danos celulares, a fim de verificar se a ordena\u00e7\u00e3o resultante foi determinada em fun\u00e7\u00e3o do grupo funcional a que pertence cada esp\u00e9cie. O experimento foi realizado com tr\u00eas esp\u00e9cies arb\u00f3reas pioneiras (Pi; <em>Croton floribundus, Inga sessilis e Rapanea ferrug\u00ednea<\/em>) e tr\u00eas n\u00e3o pioneiras (<em>NPi; Eugenia uniflora, Esenbeckia leiocarpa e Ocotea odorifera<\/em>) nativas da Mata Atl\u00e2ntica. Estas foram crescidas em solo coletado em fragmento urbano de Floresta por 90 dias, com aduba\u00e7\u00e3o balanceada (controle) e em solo enriquecido de Ni, Zn e Ni+Zn, alcan\u00e7ando concentra\u00e7\u00f5es tr\u00eas vezes mais altas do que as propostas pela CETESB para preven\u00e7\u00e3o de riscos associados \u00e0 contamina\u00e7\u00e3o de solos (30 e 86 mg\/ Kg de solo para Ni e Zn respectivamente). Os resultados mostraram que as concentra\u00e7\u00f5es desses metais aumentaram significativamente nas fra\u00e7\u00f5es biodispon\u00edveis do solo, nos tratamentos em que houve adi\u00e7\u00e3o destes. Os maiores teores de Ni e Zn nas plantas foram encontrados nos tratamentos com o acr\u00e9scimo destes. O conte\u00fado absoluto (concentra\u00e7\u00e3o*massa seca de cada \u00f3rg\u00e3o das plantas) de Ni e Zn nas plantas das esp\u00e9cies avaliadas neste estudo refletiu diretamente o n\u00edvel no solo desses metais nas formas dispon\u00edveis, sendo mais alto em esp\u00e9cies pioneiras do que nas esp\u00e9cies n\u00e3o pioneiras. \u00cdndices de transloca\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o foram similares entre esp\u00e9cies pioneiras ou entre n\u00e3o pioneiras e houve a transloca\u00e7\u00e3o apenas de Ni para a parte a\u00e9rea, nos tratamentos com excesso desse metal. As esp\u00e9cies arb\u00f3reas apresentaram caracter\u00edsticas bioqu\u00edmicas diferentes entre si e semelhantes a exposi\u00e7\u00e3o aos metais n\u00edquel e zinco.
