A banca foi composta pela Doutora Adriana Hissae Hayashi (IPA), Dra. In\u00eas Cordeiro (IPA) e Dra. Its distribution is tropical and subtropical. The objective of this work was to identify diagnostic characters that can support studies for delimitation of the species <em>Ipomoea saopaulista<\/em> O&#8217;Donell and <em>Ipomoea reticulata<\/em> O&#8217;Donell that present several morphological similarities. Leaf, stem and root samples were processed according to the usual techniques in light and scanning electron microscopy. Histochemical tests were performed to identify the chemical nature of the secretion. The leaves are ovoid in shape, with an acute and acuminate apex in <em>I. reticulata<\/em> and obtuse and convex in <em>I. saopaulista<\/em>, lobed base and entire margin. The primary vein pattern is pinnate and the secondary vein is brochidodromous. The course of tertiary veins in <em>I. reticulata<\/em> is convex to sinuous, while in <em>I. saopaulista<\/em> it is sinuous. The leaf blade epidermis presents an anticline wall contour differentiated between the species (adaxial surface &#8211; straight in <em>I. reticulata<\/em> and wavy to sinuous in <em>I. saopaulista<\/em>; abaxial surface &#8211; wavy to sinuous in <em>I. reticulata<\/em> and sinuous in <em>I. saopaulista<\/em>). The leaves are amphistomatic with a paracytic stoma and, on the adaxial surface, epicuticular striae cover the stomata up to the ostiole, while on the abaxial surface, striae are absent over the stoma. The indumentum consists of no-glandular and glandular trichomes. The mesophyll is isobilateral for <em>I. reticulata<\/em> and dorsiventral for <em>I. saopaulista<\/em>. The primary vein is biconvex and has a bilateral vascular bundle. On the petiole, the extrafloral nectary, located at the junction between the base of the leaf blade and the apex of the petiole, is of the crypt type. The stem presents unusual secondary growth, due to the presence of successive cambia and intraxylary phloem. The root is adventitious and has unusual secondary growth like the stem, but there is no intraxylary phloem. Laticifers and idioblasts containing druses were observed in all vegetative organs, while starch grains and phenolic compounds were seen only in the stem and root. The anatomical characters of diagnostic value for the species were found in the leaf (shape and angle of the leaf apex, course of the tertiary vein, contour of the anticlinal wall of the epidermal cells and type of mesophyll) and new characters were recorded for the first time for the genus (occurrence of epicuticular striae on the stomata and successive cambia in the root).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Key words<\/strong>: intraxylary phloem, secretory structures, cambial variant<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>RESUMO<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A fam\u00edlia Convolvulaceae possui 63 g\u00eaneros e cerca de 1.900 esp\u00e9cies, sendo que no Brasil s\u00e3o encontrados 25 g\u00eaneros e 422 esp\u00e9cies. <em>Ipomoea <\/em>L. \u00e9 o g\u00eanero mais representativo de Convolvulaceae, com cerca de 600-700 esp\u00e9cies. Sua distribui\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 tropical e subtropical. O objetivo do trabalho foi identificar caracteres diagn\u00f3sticos que possam subsidiar os estudos para a delimita\u00e7\u00e3o das esp\u00e9cies <em>Ipomoea saopaulista<\/em> O\u00b4Donell e <em>Ipomoea reticulata<\/em> O\u2019Donell que apresentam diversas similaridades morfol\u00f3gicas. Amostras de folha, caule e raiz foram processadas segundo as t\u00e9cnicas usuais em microscopia de luz e eletr\u00f4nica de varredura. Testes histoqu\u00edmicos foram realizados para identificar a natureza qu\u00edmica da secre\u00e7\u00e3o. As folhas t\u00eam formato ovado, com \u00e1pice agudo e acuminado em <em>I. reticulata<\/em> e obtuso e convexo em <em>I. saopaulista<\/em>, base lobada e margem inteira. O padr\u00e3o da nervura prim\u00e1ria \u00e9 pinado e o da secund\u00e1ria \u00e9 broquid\u00f3dromo. Nas nervuras terci\u00e1rias, o curso de<em> I. reticulata<\/em> \u00e9 convexo a sinuoso, enquanto em <em>I. saopaulista <\/em>\u00e9 sinuoso. A epiderme da l\u00e2mina foliar apresenta contorno da parede anticlinal diferenciado entre as esp\u00e9cies (superf\u00edcie adaxial &#8211; reto em<em> I. reticulata<\/em> e ondulado a sinuoso em <em>I. saopaulista<\/em>; superf\u00edcie abaxial &#8211; ondulado a sinuoso em<em> I. reticulata<\/em> e sinuoso em <em>I. saopaulista<\/em>). As folhas s\u00e3o anfiestom\u00e1ticas com est\u00f4mato do tipo parac\u00edtico e, na superf\u00edcie adaxial, as estrias epicuticulares recobrem o est\u00f4mato at\u00e9 o ost\u00edolo, enquanto na superf\u00edcie abaxial, as estrias s\u00e3o ausentes sobre o est\u00f4mato. O indumento \u00e9 constitu\u00eddo por tricoma tector e glandular. O mesofilo \u00e9 isobilateral para <em>I. reticulata<\/em> e dorsiventral para <em>I. saopaulista.<\/em> A nervura prim\u00e1ria \u00e9 biconvexa e apresenta feixe vascular bicolateral. No pec\u00edolo, o nect\u00e1rio extrafloral, localizado na jun\u00e7\u00e3o entre a base da l\u00e2mina foliar e \u00e1pice do pec\u00edolo, \u00e9 do tipo cripta. O caule apresenta crescimento secund\u00e1rio n\u00e3o usual, devido \u00e0 presen\u00e7a de c\u00e2mbios sucessivos e floema intraxilem\u00e1tico. A raiz \u00e9 advent\u00edcia e apresenta crescimento secund\u00e1rio n\u00e3o usual como o caule, por\u00e9m n\u00e3o ocorre floema intraxilem\u00e1tico. Latic\u00edferos e idioblastos contendo drusas foram observados em todos os \u00f3rg\u00e3os vegetativos, enquanto gr\u00e3os de amido e compostos fen\u00f3licos foram visualizados apenas no caule e raiz.
