In urban areas, these fragments have been affected by a variety of pollutants, such as heavy metals adsorbed to particulate matter suspended in the atmosphere. Due to the high toxicity of heavy metals and their persistence in the environment, they constitute a threat to vegetation, which can induce metabolic changes characteristic of oxidative stress. Metals accumulated at toxic levels to plants can induce the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can cause cell death due to oxidative stress. Tolerance and adaptation mechanisms can attenuate the damage caused by oxidative stress in order to maintain the redox state in plants in balance. The antioxidant defense consists of the enzymatic and non-enzymatic systems. The toxicity of metals, such as Cu, Zn and Ni, depends on the intensity of stress and the sensitivity of the species. Within this approach, the PEFI (Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga) is one of the most significant remnants of Atlantic Forest in urban areas of the country. It is located in the southern region of the city of S\u00e3o Paulo and receives numerous atmospheric pollutants, such as particulate matter containing the aforementioned metals. In addition, studies indicate that PEFI has also been affected by the increasing air temperature increase, caused by anthropic impacts of land use and land cover. However, the tolerance levels of many plant species from Atlantic Forest fragments, such as the PEFI, are not well settled when subjected to air pollutants and climate change. Based on the results of previous studies carried out by our research team, where it was concluded that: pioneer trees are more tolerant against oxidative stress than non-pioneer species; non-pioneer trees have higher levels of ROS and a less effective antioxidant metabolism, this work was based on the hypothesis that some functional groups of the plant community present in PEFI, such as pioneer species, may be less susceptible to metals of vehicular origin, and elevation of temperature, while non-pioneer species may be more susceptible to these stressors. Therefore, the present study evaluated the temporal profile of antioxidant defenses and cell damage indicators in roots and leaves of species of different functional groups, being a pioneer tree species, <em>Croton floribundus<\/em>, and a non-pioneer tree species, <em>Esenbeckia leiocarpa<\/em>, subjected to temperature elevation and excess of Cu, Zn and Ni metals in the soil. The results obtained indicated that the temperature influenced the parameters height and number of leaves of <em>C. floribundus<\/em>. In <em>E. leiocarpa<\/em>, the height parameter was higher in treatments with the addition of metals, with no variation in the number of leaves. The pioneer species showed greater tolerance to oxidative stress caused by temperature factors and soil metals and the non-pioneer species did not show an efficient mechanism for detoxification of ROS when subjected to temperature elevation, simulating climate change, and to excess metals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Keywords:<\/strong> Antioxidants, Climate Change, Metals, Atlantic Forest, Functional Groups.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>RESUMO<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Atualmente, a maior parte da Mata Atl\u00e2ntica existe em pequenos fragmentos, compostos por florestas secund\u00e1rias em est\u00e1gios sucessionais iniciais e m\u00e9dios. Em \u00e1reas urbanas, esses fragmentos v\u00eam sendo afetados por uma diversidade de poluentes, como metais pesados adsorvidos ao material particulado suspenso na atmosfera. Devido alta toxicidade dos metais pesados e a persist\u00eancia destes no ambiente, estes constituem uma amea\u00e7a \u00e0 vegeta\u00e7\u00e3o, os quais podem induzir altera\u00e7\u00f5es metab\u00f3licas caracter\u00edsticas do estresse oxidativo. Os metais acumulados em n\u00edveis t\u00f3xicos para as plantas induzem a forma\u00e7\u00e3o de esp\u00e9cies reativas de oxig\u00eanio (EROs), causando a morte celular devido ao estresse oxidativo. Os mecanismos de toler\u00e2ncia e adapta\u00e7\u00e3o podem atenuar os danos causados pelo estresse oxidativo a fim de manter em equil\u00edbrio do estado redox nas plantas. A defesa antioxidante \u00e9 constitu\u00edda pelos sistemas enzim\u00e1tico e n\u00e3o enzim\u00e1tico. A toxicidade de metais, como Cu, Zn e Ni, depende da intensidade do estresse e sensibilidade das esp\u00e9cies. Dentro desta abordagem, o PEFI (Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga) \u00e9 um dos mais significativos remanescentes de Mata Atl\u00e2ntica em \u00e1rea urbana do pa\u00eds. Est\u00e1 situado na regi\u00e3o sul do munic\u00edpio de S\u00e3o Paulo e recebe in\u00fameros poluentes atmosf\u00e9ricos, como o material particulado contendo os referidos metais. Al\u00e9m disso, estudos indicam que o PEFI tamb\u00e9m vem sendo afetado pelo aumento crescente da temperatura do ar, causado por impactos antr\u00f3picos do uso e cobertura do solo. Por\u00e9m, os n\u00edveis de toler\u00e2ncia de muitas esp\u00e9cies vegetais de fragmentos de Mata Atl\u00e2ntica, como o PEFI, n\u00e3o s\u00e3o bem estabelecidos quando submetidas aos poluentes a\u00e9reos e altera\u00e7\u00f5es clim\u00e1ticas. Com base em resultados de estudos realizados anteriormente por nossa equipe de pesquisa, onde foi conclu\u00eddo que: \u00e1rvores pioneiras s\u00e3o mais tolerantes contra o estresse oxidativo do que as esp\u00e9cies n\u00e3o pioneiras; \u00e1rvores n\u00e3o pioneiras apresentam maiores n\u00edveis de EROs e um metabolismo antioxidante menos eficaz, este trabalho se baseou na hip\u00f3tese de que alguns grupos funcionais da comunidade vegetal presente no PEFI, como as esp\u00e9cies pioneiras, podem ser menos suscet\u00edveis aos metais de origem veicular, e eleva\u00e7\u00e3o de temperatura, enquanto esp\u00e9cies n\u00e3o pioneiras podem ser mais suscet\u00edveis a esses estressores. Sendo assim, no presente estudo avaliou-se o perfil temporal das defesas antioxidantes e dos indicadores de danos celulares em ra\u00edzes e folhas de esp\u00e9cies de diferentes grupos funcionais, sendo uma esp\u00e9cie arb\u00f3rea pioneira, <em>Croton floribundus<\/em>, e uma esp\u00e9cie arb\u00f3rea n\u00e3o pioneira, <em>Esenbeckia leiocarpa<\/em>, submetidas \u00e0 eleva\u00e7\u00e3o de temperatura e ao excesso dos metais Cu, Zn e Ni no solo. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que a temperatura influenciou os par\u00e2metros altura e n\u00famero de folhas de <em>C. floribundus<\/em>. Em <em>E. leiocarpa<\/em> o par\u00e2metro altura foi maior nos tratamentos com adi\u00e7\u00e3o de metais, n\u00e3o apresentando varia\u00e7\u00e3o em n\u00famero de folhas.
