Carla Ferragut,\u00a0do N\u00facleo de Pesquisas em Ecologia\/IBt e a banca examinadora foi composta pela Dra. Denise de Campos Bicudo (N\u00facleo de Pesquisas em Ecologia\/IBt) e Prof. Dr. Andr\u00e9 Cordeiro dos Santos (UNICAMP).<\/p>\n<hr align=\"center\" noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"1\" width=\"100%\" \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Efeitos do enriquecimento e da dilui\u00e7\u00e3o da \u00e1gua eutr\u00f3fica sobre a biomassa e estrutura do fitopl\u00e2ncton e do epip\u00e9lon<\/h3>\n<hr align=\"center\" noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"1\" width=\"100%\" \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>ABSTRACT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The photosynthetic activity of epipelon plays an important role in the in phosphorus interception in many ecosystems, which may contribute to the maintenance of recovered lakes and shallow reservoirs. However, the epipelon ecology knowledge still has many gaps, especially in tropical shallow lakes and reservoirs. In this sense, this study evaluated experimentally the effect of combined and isolated N and P enrichment and oligotrophication on the epipelon and its relationships with phytoplankton in a shallow eutrophic reservoir (Lago das Gar\u00e7as, PEFI, S\u00e3o Paulo). Thus, two experiments were carried out in open-bottomed mesocosms in the littoral zone during the July and August\/2017. The samplings were performed on the 7<sup>th<\/sup> and 14<sup>th<\/sup> day of the experimental period. In the enrichment experiment, the combined and isolated N and P enrichment had a positive effect on the suspended particulate matter, including phytoplankton, and the light attenuation. attenuation did not decrease increase with changes in the phytoplankton limiting potential, as the light attenuation remained high throughout the experimental period (78-98%). In the oligotrophication experiment (25%, 50% and 75% water dilution), treatments with different types of dilution promoted the reduction of nutrient availability and increased light availability, which reflected in the reduction of phytoplankton biomass and biovolume and increase in the epipelon. Changes in phytoplankton and epipelon structure were found with increasing water dilution. Epipelic algae species were associated with different degrees of oligotrophication, such as <em>Pediastrum simplex<\/em>, <em>Frustilia crassinervia<\/em> and <em>Desmodesmus intermedius<\/em>, which was associated with 25% and 50% dilution treatments. We concluded that changes in N and P stoichiometry had effects on phytoplankton biomass, but the change had little or no significant effect on epipelon biomass, mainly due to light limitation. However, oligotrophication had positive effect on the epipelon algal biomass and density and changed the structure community, favoring the development of the epipelon photosynthetically active. Our findings showed that the epipelon responded rapidly to the dilution treatments, suggesting the development of the epipelon may contribute to the maintenance of oligotrophication of restored ponds and reservoirs.<br \/>\nKeywords: algal biovolume, chlorophyll-a concentration, species composition, open-bottomed mesocosms, eutrophic reservoir<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>RESUMO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">O epip\u00e9lon fotossinteticamente ativo tem importante papel na intercepta\u00e7\u00e3o de f\u00f3sforo em muitos ecossistemas, o que pode contribuir para a manuten\u00e7\u00e3o de lagos e reservat\u00f3rios rasos recuperados. Contudo, o conhecimento sobre ecologia do epip\u00e9lon tem ainda muitas lacunas, principalmente em lagos e reservat\u00f3rios rasos tropicais. Nesse sentido, o presente estudo avaliou experimentalmente o efeito do enriquecimento combinado e isolado por N e P e da oligotrofiza\u00e7\u00e3o sobre o epipelon e suas rela\u00e7\u00f5es com o fitopl\u00e2ncton em um reservat\u00f3rio raso eutr\u00f3fico (Lago das Gar\u00e7as PEFI, S\u00e3o Paulo). Assim, dois experimentos foram realizados em mesocosmos de fundo aberto na regi\u00e3o litor\u00e2nea em julho e agosto. As amostragens foram realizadas no 7\u00ba e no 14\u00ba dia do per\u00edodo experimental. No experimento de enriquecimento, evidenciou-se que o enriquecimento combinado e isolado por N e P teve efeito positivo sobre a quantidade de material particulado em suspens\u00e3o, incluindo o fitopl\u00e2ncton, e sobre a atenua\u00e7\u00e3o da luz em curto intervalo de tempo. Mudan\u00e7as no potencial de limita\u00e7\u00e3o do fitopl\u00e2ncton n\u00e3o aumentou a disponibilidade de luz para o epipelon, pois a atenua\u00e7\u00e3o da luz permaneceu alta durante todo o per\u00edodo experimental (78-98%). No experimento de oligotrofiza\u00e7\u00e3o (25%, 50% e 75% de dilui\u00e7\u00e3o da \u00e1gua), os tratamentos com os diferentes tipos de dilui\u00e7\u00e3o promoveram a redu\u00e7\u00e3o da disponibilidade de nutrientes e o aumento da disponibilidade de luz, o que refletiu na redu\u00e7\u00e3o da biomassa e biovolume fitoplanct\u00f4nico e aumento no epip\u00e9lon. Mudan\u00e7as na estrutura do fitopl\u00e2ncton e do epip\u00e9lon foram encontradas com o aumento da oligotrofiza\u00e7\u00e3o. As esp\u00e9cies de algas epip\u00e9licas foram associadas aos diferentes graus de oligotrofiza\u00e7\u00e3o, como <em>Pediastrum simplex<\/em>, <em>Frustilia crassinervia<\/em> e <em>Desmodesmus intermedius<\/em>, as quais foram associadas aos tratamentos com 25% e 50% de dilui\u00e7\u00e3o. Concluiu-se que mudan\u00e7as na estequiometria N e P tiveram efeito sobre a biomassa do fitopl\u00e2ncton, mas a mudan\u00e7a teve pouco ou nenhum efeito significativo sobre a biomassa do epip\u00e9lon, principalmente devido \u00e0 limita\u00e7\u00e3o por luz. Contudo, a oligotrofiza\u00e7\u00e3o teve efeito positivo sobre a biomassa e densidade algal e mudou a estrutura do epip\u00e9lon, favorecendo o desenvolvimento de um epip\u00e9lon fototr\u00f3fico.
