A banca foi composta pelo Dr. Carlos Eduardo de Mattos Bicudo (orientador), Dr\u00aa Andreia Tucci (Insituto de Bot\u00e2nica de S\u00e3o Paulo) e pelo Dr. Paulo Eduardo de Oliveira (Universidade de S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013USP).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">A disserta\u00e7\u00e3o defendida teve como objetivo principal conhecer a diversidade taxon\u00f4mica da ordem<br \/>\nSurirellales no Estado de S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n<hr align=\"center\" noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"1\" width=\"100%\" \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Ordem Surirellales (Bacillariophyceae) no Estado de S\u00e3o Paulo: levantamento flor\u00edstico<\/h3>\n<hr align=\"center\" noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"1\" width=\"100%\" \/>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>ABSTRACT<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Order Surirellales includes three families and nine genera that got together by having the canal raphe system raised by keels. Present floristic survey of the Order in the State S\u00e3o Paulo was conducted through the analysis of 367 permanent mountings that included phytoplankton, periphyton and surface sediment materials. Plankton samples were collected with plankton net built of 20 \u00b5m mesh size nylon; periphyton samples were obtained by collecting full submersed macrophytes or the submersed parts of them, and scrapping of hard substrates (e.g. rocks). Surface sediment samples were gathered with gravity corer. All samples were fixed and preserved in 3-5% formalin water solution and oxidized for analysis at light and scanning electronic microscopes. Two genera and the total of 40 taxa (species and taxonomic varieties) were described, illustrated and commented in detail. Morphological and metric characteristics were provided for all 40 taxa. The genus that showed the highest frequency of occurrence was <em>Surirella<\/em> (75.5% of preparations examined), followed by <em>Stenopterobia <\/em>(22.5% of preparations examined). No taxon had its occurrence equal or greater than 50% at samples analyzed: <em>Stenopterobia delicatissima<\/em> (24%), <em>Surirella splendida<\/em> (13%), <em>Surirella angusta<\/em> (9.5%), <em>Surirella <\/em>sp. 1 (9.5%), <em>Surirella tenera<\/em> (9%), <em>Stenopterobia pelagica<\/em> (8.5%), <em>Surirella<\/em> sp. 4 (8.5%), <em>Stenopterobia curvula<\/em> (8%), <em>Stenopterobia planctonica<\/em> (7.5%), <em>Surirella stalagma<\/em> (5%) and <em>Surirella guatimalensis<\/em> (5%) being the most frequent ones. 23 materials were not identified to the species level, since their representative individuals were not similar to any material cited in the literature. Absence of information derived from scanning electron microscopy collaborated with the impossibility of their taxonomic identification. 26 taxa are new citations for the State S\u00e3o Paulo, 22 of which are of representatives of <em>Surirella<\/em> and four of <em>Stenopterobia<\/em>. Finally, present study contributed to the knowledge of the S\u00e3o Paulo state diatom biodiversity as well as providing with fundamental information for taxonomic and ecological studies.<br \/>\n<strong>Keywords:<\/strong> diatom, floristic survey, S\u00e3o Paulo State, Surirellales, taxonomy<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>RESUMO<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A ordem Surirellales \u00e9 constitu\u00edda por tr\u00eas fam\u00edlias e nove g\u00eaneros reunidos por possu\u00edrem um sistema de rafe elevado em quilha. O presente levantamento flor\u00edstico da Ordem para o Estado de S\u00e3o Paulo foi realizado a partir da an\u00e1lise de 367 l\u00e2minas permanentes que incluem material do fitopl\u00e2ncton, perif\u00edton e dos sedimentos superficiais. As amostras de pl\u00e2ncton foram coletadas com rede de abertura de malha de 20 \u00b5m; as amostras de perif\u00edton foram obtidas pela coleta de exemplares inteiros de macr\u00f3fitas submersas ou das partes submersas dessas plantas e raspagem de substratos duros (rochas, por exemplo). As amostras de sedimentos superficiais foram coletadas com testemunhador de gravidade. Todas as amostras foram fixadas com solu\u00e7\u00e3o aquosa de formalina a 3-5% e, em seguida, oxidadas e analisadas ao microsc\u00f3pio \u00f3ptico e eletr\u00f4nico de varredura. Dois g\u00eaneros e o total de 40 t\u00e1xons (esp\u00e9cies e variedade taxon\u00f4micas) foram descritos, ilustrados e comentados. Caracter\u00edsticas morfol\u00f3gicas e m\u00e9tricas foram inclu\u00eddas para todos os t\u00e1xons. O g\u00eanero que apresentou a maior frequ\u00eancia de ocorr\u00eancia foi <em>Surirella<\/em> (75,5% das prepara\u00e7\u00f5es examinadas), seguido de <em>Stenopterobia <\/em>(22,5% das prepara\u00e7\u00f5es examinadas). Nenhum t\u00e1xon teve ocorr\u00eancia igual ou superior a 50% nas amostras analisadas, sendo <em>Stenopterobia delicatissima<\/em> (24%), <em>Surirella splendida<\/em> (13%), <em>Surirella angusta<\/em> (9,5%), <em>Surirella <\/em>sp. 1 (9,5%), <em>Surirella tenera<\/em> (9%), <em>Stenopterobia pelagica<\/em> (8,5%), <em>Surirella<\/em> sp. 4 (8,5%), <em>Stenopterobia curvula<\/em> (8%), <em>Stenopterobia planctonica<\/em> (7,5%), <em>Surirella stalagma<\/em> (5%) e <em>Surirella guatimalensis<\/em> (5%), as mais frequentes. 23 t\u00e1xons n\u00e3o foram identificados em n\u00edvel esp\u00e9cie, pois seus indiv\u00edduos constituintes n\u00e3o possu\u00edam semelhan\u00e7a com os materiais representados na literatura consultada. A aus\u00eancia de informa\u00e7\u00e3o derivada da microscopia eletr\u00f4nica de varredura colaborou para a impossibilidade de sua identifica\u00e7\u00e3o. 26 t\u00e1xons s\u00e3o novas cita\u00e7\u00f5es para o Estado, sendo 22 deles representantes do g\u00eanero <em>Surirella<\/em> e quatro do g\u00eanero <em>Stenopterobia<\/em>.
