A banca examinadora foi composta pela Dr.\u00aa Marisa Domingos (orientadora\/IBt), Dr.\u00aa Patricia Bulbovas (IBt) e\u00a0Dr.\u00aa Claudia Maria Furlan (USP). O trabalho teve como objetivo geral a contribui\u00e7\u00e3o para ampliar o conhecimento do potencial de toler\u00e2ncia de esp\u00e9cies arb\u00f3reas nativas da Floresta Mata Atl\u00e2ntica: 1) Conhecer o perfil das defesas antioxidantes em \u00e1rvores de esp\u00e9cies nativas presentes em remanescentes florestais do dom\u00ednio Mata Atl\u00e2ntica em S\u00e3o Paulo, pertencentes a dois grupos funcionais distintos (pioneiras e n\u00e3o pioneiras); 2) \u00a0Determinar se h\u00e1 varia\u00e7\u00e3o espacial e sazonal, por meio da an\u00e1lise de amostras foliares obtidas em per\u00edodos seco e \u00famido e provenientes de \u00e1rvores das esp\u00e9cies ocorrentes em tr\u00eas unidades de conserva\u00e7\u00e3o situadas nas Regi\u00f5es Metropolitanas de Campinas e S\u00e3o Paulo; 3); Indicar poss\u00edveis fatores de estresse ambiental indutores das varia\u00e7\u00f5es no potencial redox nos dois grupos de esp\u00e9cies pioneiras e n\u00e3o pioneiras.<\/p>\n<hr align=\"center\" noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"1\" width=\"100%\" \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Potencial redox de \u00e1rvores nativas do dom\u00ednio da Mata Atl\u00e2ntica, em S\u00e3o Paulo,<br \/>\nexpostas a perturba\u00e7\u00f5es ambientais<\/h3>\n<hr align=\"center\" noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"1\" width=\"100%\" \/>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>ABSTRACT<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Forest ecosystems have been affected by natural stresses, such as extreme climatic conditions, and stresses of anthropogenic origin, such as air pollution, which has been increasing over the years due to the use and land occupation by man. These environmental stresses increase the reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation in plant cells, which may cause several changes in biochemical and physiological processes in plants, death of individuals, elimination of susceptible species and alterations in the structure of populations and the entire plant community. The severity of oxidative damage caused by ROS in plants, however, depends on how effective is their antioxidant defense system, which is able to prevent or restrict the excessive production of ROS. Thus, this study was proposed aiming to: know the profile of antioxidant defenses in pioneer and non-pioneer species present in Atlantic Forest remnants in S\u00e3o Paulo; assess whether these antioxidants are potentially capable of preventing or restricting oxidative cell damage; determine whether spatial and seasonal variations in these biochemical characteristics of the species included in the study are evidenced and indicate possible environmental inducers of changes in the redox potential in the two successional groups of species. We assumed the following general working hypotheses: the tolerance level against oxidative stress is similar in the pioneer tree species\u00a0 and higher than the tolerance level of the non-pioneer tree species; antioxidant characteristics in tree species belonged to both successional groups vary spatially in response to combined effects of natural and anthropogenic stresses. Therefore,\u00a0 leaf samples from pioneer and non-pioneer species\u00a0 were collected in three Atlantic Forest fragments included in conservation unities in S\u00e3o Paulo State (<em>Parque Municipal Nascentes de Paranapiacaba<\/em> in Santo Andr\u00e9, <em>Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga <\/em>in S\u00e3o Paulo, <em>ARIE Mata de Santa Genebra<\/em> in Campinas) exposed to distincts climatic conditions and air pollution sources, during wet and dry periods, for analyses of ascorbic acid, glutathione, catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, indicators of oxidative damage, such as pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids) and hydroperoxide diene conjugated. The pioneer tree species showed similar biochemical characteristics and different from the characteristics of non-pioneer species. These biochemical characteristics of both successional groups varied spatially in response to combined effects of natural and anthropogenic stresses. The pioneer and non-pioneer tree species from the Paranapiacaba Park were less susceptible to oxidative stress than the species sampled in the other conservation unities. The biochemical responses of trees belonging to both functional groups followed linear gradients in climatic conditions and concentrations oxidative gaseous established between the study sites.<br \/>\n<strong>Keywords<\/strong>: environmental stresses, Atlantic Forest, pioneer tree species and non-pioneer, antioxidants, oxidative damage<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>RESUMO<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Os ecossistemas florestais t\u00eam sido afetados por estresses naturais, como extremos nas condi\u00e7\u00f5es clim\u00e1ticas e estresses de origem antr\u00f3pica, como a polui\u00e7\u00e3o atmosf\u00e9rica, que vem aumentando ao longo dos anos, devido ao crescente uso e ocupa\u00e7\u00e3o do solo pelo homem. Os estresses ambientais podem ocasionar o aumento de esp\u00e9cies reativas de oxig\u00eanio (ERO), que agir\u00e3o em n\u00edvel celular, ocasionando diversas altera\u00e7\u00f5es nos processos bioqu\u00edmicos e fisiol\u00f3gicos de plantas, podendo ocasionar a morte de indiv\u00edduos e, com isso, causar mudan\u00e7as na estrutura de popula\u00e7\u00f5es e ocasionar a elimina\u00e7\u00e3o de esp\u00e9cies sens\u00edveis da comunidade vegetal, alterando sua estrutura e fisionomia. A intensidade dos efeitos causados pelas ERO nas plantas, no entanto, depende de qu\u00e3o eficiente \u00e9 seu sistema de defesas antioxidantes, que s\u00e3o capazes de impedir ou restringir a produ\u00e7\u00e3o excessiva dessas ERO. Assim, o presente estudo foi proposto objetivando: conhecer o perfil das defesas antioxidantes em esp\u00e9cies arb\u00f3reas pioneiras e n\u00e3o pioneiras presentes em remanescentes de Mata Atl\u00e2ntica em S\u00e3o Paulo; avaliar se estes antioxidantes s\u00e3o potencialmente capazes de impedir ou restringir danos celulares; determinar se h\u00e1 varia\u00e7\u00e3o espacial e sazonal nessas caracter\u00edsticas bioqu\u00edmicas das esp\u00e9cies inclu\u00eddas no estudo e indicar poss\u00edveis fatores de estresse ambiental indutores das varia\u00e7\u00f5es no potencial redox nos dois grupos de esp\u00e9cies.\u00a0 Assumimos as seguintes hip\u00f3teses gerais de trabalho: as esp\u00e9cies arb\u00f3reas pioneiras apresentam n\u00edveis de toler\u00e2ncia ao estresse oxidativo similares entre si e maiores dos das esp\u00e9cies arb\u00f3reas n\u00e3o pioneiras; as caracter\u00edsticas antioxidantes de esp\u00e9cies arb\u00f3reas pertencentes a ambos os grupos funcionais variam espacialmente em fun\u00e7\u00e3o de efeitos combinados de fatores de estresse ambiental, de origens natural e antr\u00f3pica. Para isso, foram realizadas coletas de folhas de esp\u00e9cies pertencentes a cada uma dessas categorias sucessionais em tr\u00eas fragmentos de Mata Atl\u00e2ntica inclu\u00eddos em unidades de conserva\u00e7\u00e3o no Estado de S\u00e3o Paulo (Parque Municipal Nascentes de Paranapiacaba\/Santo Andr\u00e9, Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga\/S\u00e3o Paulo, ARIE Mata de Santa Genebra\/Campinas) expostos a condi\u00e7\u00f5es clim\u00e1ticas e fontes de polui\u00e7\u00e3o distintas, em per\u00edodos \u00famido e seco, para an\u00e1lise de \u00e1cido asc\u00f3rbico, glutationa, catalase, super\u00f3xido dismutase, glutationa redutase, indicadores de danos oxidativos como teor de pigmentos (clorofila <em>a<\/em>, clorofila <em>b<\/em> e carotenoides) e hidroper\u00f3xido dienos conjugados. As esp\u00e9cies arb\u00f3reas pioneiras apresentaram caracter\u00edsticas bioqu\u00edmicas similares entre si e distintas das caracter\u00edsticas das esp\u00e9cies n\u00e3o pioneiras. Essas caracter\u00edsticas bioqu\u00edmicas das esp\u00e9cies de ambos os grupos funcionais variaram espacialmente em fun\u00e7\u00e3o de efeitos combinados de fatores de estresse ambiental, de origens natural e antr\u00f3pica. No Parque de Paranapiacaba, as esp\u00e9cies arb\u00f3reas pioneiras e n\u00e3o pioneiras mostraram ser menos suscet\u00edveis ao estresse oxidativo.
